Description: This is a protest against AIT regarding the lack of follow-up action to our rally on March 29, 2006 , in which we demanded the right to apply for US national (not “citizen”) passports, based on the US Constitution, the San Francisco Peace Treaty, and Hague Convention IV.

"" Failing to receive any appropriate action or response from AIT or the US State Dept. in regard to these US passport applications, and recognizing that our constitutional rights against "cruel and unusual punishment" by not having an internationally recognized nationality were being violated, several members of our group, led by Dr. Roger C. S. Lin, filed suit in the US District Court, Washington, D.C. on Oct. 24, 2006. This court case is proceeding at the present time. ""

"" We reiterate that we have no quarrels with the One China policy based on the three Joint Communiques and the Taiwan Relations Act. We fully understand that the US does not support independence for Taiwan or unilateral moves that would change the status quo as the US defines it. Moreover, we urge everyone to write to Congresswoman Donna M. Christensen, Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, House of Representatives, to inform her that Taiwan is the sixth major insular area of the USA.

With these premises in mind, and recognizing that the ROC in Taiwan is an enemy of the US Constitution, because it is blocking the Taiwanese peoples' enjoyment of fundamental US constitutional rights, in order to more effectively advance our goals, all of our support groups have launched a "I am a Taiwanese and not a Chinese" Petition Drive (see http://www.taiwanbasic.com/sign/petition.htm). "" TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Former President Lee Teng-hui said yesterday that only after Taiwan has a clear legal status as a nation will the island be likely to join the United Nations, and that well-rounded preparations are needed to pave the way.
Lee made the remarks while speaking at the sixth founding anniversary of the opposition Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU).

Lee said he didn't join the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's mass rally in Kaohsiung to promote the "UN for Taiwan" bid, lest his stance on the issue be misunderstood.

Now that the U.S. has said neither Taiwan nor the Republic of China is a country, and that Taiwan is also not part of the People's Republic of China, what counts most is for the island to have a clear legal status as a sovereign state if it wants to join the U.N.

Both the DPP and the opposition Kuomintang staged mass rallies in Kaohsiung and Taichung, respectively, demanding Taiwan's right to join the U.N., but more important things have been left undone, he continued.

The most important task is for both ruling and opposition parties to work on constructing Taiwan's legal status as a sovereign state, he said: "It's useless for us to say we are a sovereign state, because such a legal status should be recognized by the international community."

The former president noted Taiwan's political chaos worsened further after the DPP continued to seize the power in 2004, as a result of unprecedented struggles between the DPP and KMT.

He continued that political turmoil is to blame for the poor economy and social disorder at the moment, and that none of the political parities or politicians are willing to pursue political stability.

Taiwan is facing a turning point or a critical juncture in a context of major change, in that people hope for the emergence of a fresh new political force in the near future. ""

推動制憲一直不遺餘力的前總統李登輝，8日卻給了持續推動台灣加入聯合國的獨派團體一記當頭棒喝。李前總統強調，現在想加入聯合國根本就是不可能的，因為當年我們退出聯合國的時候，台灣的法定地位不確定，還只能算是美國軍事政權手下的一塊土地。李登輝今日大膽的提出這個說法，預料將給獨派陣營相當的震撼。

李登輝於8日下午1時出席北門扶輪社例會時指出，台灣不可能加入聯合國，因為台灣的國際地位未定，這種論調，無疑給許多想要推動台灣加入聯合國人士相當難以接受的事實。

不過，李登輝可不是隨便說說，他指出，國民黨當年撤退到台灣，雖然在聯合國中擁有席位，但是實質上卻接受美國的保護，當年台灣退出聯合國的歷史，表示中華人民共和國取代了中華民國的蔣政權，也因當時台灣沒有明確的法定地位，才會讓台灣變成美國軍事政權的一塊土地。為了讓台灣重返國際，他才要持續推動制憲，希望透過台灣憲法讓台灣擁有國際人格。

手護台灣大聯盟台灣制憲運動與美國台灣國際關係中心今天也在美國國會參議院舉辦「台灣憲法改造與美中台關係」研討會。身兼台灣制憲運動總召的李登輝將在晚間9時30分以，越洋視訊連線方式，發表演說，讓國際瞭解台灣制憲的重要與必要性。

扁再預告：國慶祝詞會在緩和兩岸緊張對立關係上多所著墨

再過兩天就是雙十國慶，陳水扁總統8日在參加第13屆國家磐石獎暨第6屆海外台商磐石獎頒獎典禮致詞時再度預告，他會在發表國慶祝詞時，針對穩定兩岸關係部分，特別就降低、緩和兩岸緊張和對立，追求兩岸正常化方面多所著墨，相信一定有助於兩岸和平發展，及未來相關的交流、合作。

為表示對國慶祝詞的重視，陳水扁總統表示，演講稿到現在都還在潤飾中，並特別從口袋掏出一張紙，表示現在縱使在車上，都一直放在口袋中，一改再改，希望能夠讓大家稱心滿意。

面對12家國家磐石獎得獎企業以及4家海外台商磐石獎得主，以及中小企業代表，陳水扁總統在致詞時指出，未來除繼續堅持改革外，也將盡全力穩定兩岸關係，確保台海和平，讓台商在資金進出和往來上更有保障和安全感，這也是他連任以來最大的任務，因為政府與產業是生命共同體， 一定要突破兩岸之間的侷限，開創未來的經濟榮景。

阿扁也再度預告在循例發表國慶祝詞時，將就「團結台灣」、「穩定兩岸」、「安定社會」以及「繁榮經濟」發表重大談話，在穩定兩岸關係方面，將特別在降低、緩和兩岸關係的緊張和對立，追求兩岸正常化方面會多所著墨。

不過，可能是太興奮預告的關係，阿扁總統竟不小心將國慶祝詞說成了「元旦」重大談話，表示相信「元旦」重大談話， 一定有助於兩岸和平發展以及未來相關的交流和合作。

「國家磐石獎」已經舉辦了13年，主要是為激勵中小企業升級及發展，選拔經營穩健殷實、在各方面都表現卓越，並對社會有具體貢獻的中小企業給予公開表揚；並在六年前另外增設「海外台商磐石獎」，表彰海外經營事業績效卓著，並對祖國或僑居地等國際社會有貢獻的台商企業，以肯定當選企業成就，提供全球中小企業相互學習觀摩的機會，進而提昇華人國際形象及地位。
